And yet — people are buying dedicated cameras in record numbers again. Mirrorless shipments were up 12.5% year-on-year in 2025, hitting 6.31 million units1.

Something doesn't add up. If phones are so good, why are people spending $800 to $3,000 on a camera that can't even send a text?

Because photography isn't just about the output file. It's about control, intention, and the physics of light hitting a sensor through actual glass. Let me break down what matters.


What actually matters in a camera

Marketing will drown you in specs. Ignore most of them. Here's what moves the needle:

Sensor size. This is the single most important spec. A bigger sensor captures more light, produces less noise in low light, and gives you more control over depth of field (that blurry background look). More on this below.

Autofocus system. Modern mirrorless cameras use on-sensor phase detection with AI subject tracking — they can lock onto eyes, animals, vehicles, even birds in flight. A camera with bad autofocus is a camera you'll fight constantly. This is where 2026 cameras have leapt ahead of anything from five years ago.

Lens mount. This determines which lenses you can use. Pick a mount, and you're in that ecosystem. Canon RF, Sony E, Nikon Z, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds — each has its own library. This choice matters more than the body itself, because bodies come and go but your lens collection stays.

Dynamic range. How much detail a sensor captures from the darkest shadows to the brightest highlights in a single exposure. Higher dynamic range means more latitude in editing — you can pull detail out of shadows without the image turning to noise.

Megapixels. The most overhyped spec in photography. 20 megapixels is enough for almost anything, including large prints. 24MP is the sweet spot for most people. 40MP+ matters for commercial work or heavy cropping. Your phone has 48MP and still can't match a 20MP full-frame camera in real-world image quality. Megapixels are not the bottleneck.


DSLR vs mirrorless: a settled debate

A DSLR uses a physical mirror to bounce light from the lens up into an optical viewfinder. When you take a photo, the mirror flips up, light hits the sensor, and the mirror comes back down. This mechanical dance worked for decades.

A mirrorless camera removes the mirror entirely. Light goes straight from the lens to the sensor, all the time. The viewfinder is electronic — a tiny screen showing you exactly what the sensor sees, including exposure preview, histogram overlay, focus peaking, and more.

Canon discontinued its entire DSLR lineup2. The EOS 5D Mark IV — arguably the most iconic DSLR of the last decade — was added to Canon Japan's discontinuation list in 2025. Nikon and Sony made the same move years earlier. No major manufacturer is developing new DSLRs.

The advantages of mirrorless are now decisive:

  • Smaller and lighter — no mirror box means a more compact body
  • Better autofocus — phase detection points across the entire sensor, not clustered in the center
  • Silent shooting — electronic shutter means zero noise
  • Real-time exposure preview — what you see in the viewfinder is what you get
  • Video — mirrorless cameras are dramatically better for video; the always-on sensor is the reason

Is DSLR dead? For new purchases, yes. For shooting, no. A used Canon 5D Mark IV or Nikon D750 still takes excellent photos. The glass is what matters, and EF-mount and F-mount lenses can be adapted to mirrorless bodies with full functionality. But if you're buying new in 2026, you're buying mirrorless. There is no alternative.


The mirrorless landscape: five ecosystems

Canon RF mount — The biggest ecosystem in 2026. Canon overtook Sony in global mirrorless market share in 20253. Wide range from the budget R100 to the professional R1 and R5 Mark II. The RF lens library is excellent and growing fast. Downside: Canon is aggressive about blocking third-party lenses, though Sigma and Tamron have started releasing RF-mount options.

Sony's autofocus is arguably the best in the industry. The E mount is fully open to third-party lenses — Sigma, Tamron, and Samyang all make outstanding options that are often cheaper than Sony's own glass.

Nikon Z mount — Nikon was late to mirrorless but caught up fast. The Z mount has a wider diameter than competitors, which gives lens designers more flexibility. The Z6 III and Z8 are superb cameras. The lens library was thin at launch but is now competitive. Third-party support from Sigma and Tamron arrived in 2025 and is expanding.

Fujifilm X mount — APS-C only, and proud of it. Fujifilm doesn't make full-frame mirrorless. Instead, they've built the best APS-C system in the business. The X-T5 and X-H2 are excellent. Fuji's film simulation modes are legendary — they bake color science from classic film stocks (Velvia, Provia, Classic Neg) directly into the JPEG output. If you care about color straight out of camera, Fuji is unmatched. The X-M5 is the current darling for beginners and street shooters.

Micro Four Thirds — A shared mount used by Panasonic (Lumix) and OM System (formerly Olympus). Smaller sensor than APS-C, which means smaller lenses and bodies. The Panasonic GH7 is a video powerhouse. OM System's OM-5 has incredible in-body stabilization. The lens library is enormous because two manufacturers and decades of third-party support have built it up. Trade-off: the smaller sensor means less low-light performance and shallower depth of field is harder to achieve.


Sensor sizes: what they actually mean

Three sensor sizes dominate the consumer camera market:

Full-frame (36x24mm) — The reference standard, named because it matches the size of a 35mm film frame. Best low-light performance, most depth of field control, widest dynamic range. Also the most expensive — bodies start around $1,500, lenses are bigger and heavier. Canon R6 III, Sony A7 IV, Nikon Z6 III.

APS-C (roughly 23x15mm) — About 1.5x smaller than full-frame. Still excellent image quality. Smaller, lighter, cheaper bodies and lenses. The "crop factor" means a 50mm lens acts like a 75mm lens — you're effectively zoomed in. This is actually an advantage for wildlife and sports. Canon R10, Sony A6700, Nikon Z50 II, Fujifilm X-T5.

Micro Four Thirds (17x13mm) — 2x crop factor. The smallest mainstream sensor. Lenses are compact and affordable. Excellent for video and travel. Less low-light headroom. Panasonic GH7, OM System OM-5.

Here's the practical reality: in good light, you cannot tell these apart in a final image. The differences emerge in low light, at high ISO, when pushing shadows in post-processing, and when you want extremely shallow depth of field. A beginner shooting in daylight will get great results from any of these.


Lenses matter more than bodies

This is the oldest advice in photography and it's still true. Camera bodies depreciate fast — a two-year-old body loses 40-60% of its value. A good lens holds its value for a decade and optically performs just as well. Bodies get replaced every 3-4 years. Lenses last a career.

A $500 body with a $800 lens will produce better images than a $1,200 body with a kit lens8. The lens determines sharpness, bokeh character, maximum aperture (how much light it lets in), and focal length. The body processes what the lens gives it.

Start with one or two good lenses rather than the cheapest kit zoom. A 35mm f/1.8 or 50mm f/1.8 prime will teach you more about photography in a month than a body upgrade ever will. Primes force you to move, to compose with your feet, and they're optically superior to zooms at similar price points.

When you choose a camera system, you're really choosing a lens mount. Think about which lenses you'll want in two years, not which body has the best specs today.


The smartphone in the room

Let's be honest about what phones do well. In 2026, flagship phones have 1-inch sensors, variable apertures, and AI processing that runs circles around what dedicated cameras do out of the box.

Where phones win:

  • Always with you — the best camera is the one you have
  • Computational HDR that merges multiple exposures instantly
  • Night mode that stacks frames to shoot in near-darkness
  • AI-driven portrait mode with depth mapping
  • Instant sharing — photo to Instagram in seconds
  • Video stabilization that rivals a gimbal

Where dedicated cameras win:

  • Larger sensors with real physics-based depth of field
  • Interchangeable lenses — wide angle to 600mm telephoto
  • Raw files with far more editing latitude
  • Optical zoom without quality loss
  • Ergonomics for extended shooting sessions
  • Manual control over every parameter
  • Battery life measured in hundreds or thousands of shots
  • No AI "enhancement" altering your image without permission

The honest answer: if you only share photos on social media and shoot in decent light, your phone is genuinely good enough. A dedicated camera becomes worth it when you want creative control, when you shoot in difficult light, when you print large, when you need reach (wildlife, sports), or when you simply enjoy the process of photography as a deliberate act rather than a point-and-tap reflex.


Computational photography: what phones do that cameras don't

Phones compensate for their tiny sensors with software. Google's Night Sight, Apple's Smart HDR, Samsung's AI processing — these systems capture multiple frames at different exposures and merge them computationally into a single image that no single exposure could produce.

This is genuinely impressive engineering. A Pixel phone in Night Sight mode can produce a usable image in conditions where a dedicated camera with a kit lens would give you a noisy mess. The phone is capturing 15-30 frames, aligning them, denoising, tone-mapping, and applying scene-specific adjustments — all in under two seconds.

Dedicated cameras are slowly adopting some of these techniques. In-camera HDR modes, pixel-shift high resolution, and AI-based autofocus are all computational photography. But cameras remain fundamentally conservative — they give you a single raw capture and let you process it yourself. That's a feature, not a limitation. You decide what the final image looks like, not an algorithm.

The gap is closing from both sides. Phones get bigger sensors; cameras get smarter processing. But the fundamental physics advantage of a large sensor behind quality glass isn't going away.


What to buy: budget recommendations for 2026

Under $600 — Entry point:

  • Nikon Z50 II ($530 body only) — Best beginner camera in 2026. Excellent autofocus with subject detection, compact body, good lens path ahead. Pair with the Z DX 16-50mm kit lens to start.
  • Canon EOS R100 ($480 with kit lens) — The absolute cheapest way into the Canon RF ecosystem. Limited but capable. Good if you know you want Canon glass long-term.

$600-$1,200 — The sweet spot:

  • Canon EOS R10 ($880 body) — Fast autofocus, good burst rate, solid video. The best all-around APS-C camera.
  • Fujifilm X-M5 ($800 body) — Compact, beautiful color science, excellent for street and travel. Film simulations are addictive.
  • Sony A6700 ($1,100 body) — Most advanced APS-C on the market. Subject tracking AF from Sony's flagship tech. If you want the best autofocus in this range, this is it.

$1,200-$2,000 — Full-frame entry:

  • Sony A7C II ($1,800 body) — Full-frame in an APS-C-sized body. Compact, capable, great autofocus. The gateway drug to full-frame.
  • Nikon Z6 III ($1,800 body) — Outstanding all-rounder. Excellent dynamic range, great video, solid build.

Lens picks for beginners:

  • Sigma 30mm f/1.4 (APS-C) — ~$280, outstanding sharpness and low-light capability
  • Sony 50mm f/1.8 (full-frame) — ~$250, the classic "nifty fifty"
  • Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 (APS-C) — ~$700, the only zoom you need to start

The used market: where the real value is

The U.S. secondhand camera and lens market hit $2.6 billion in 20257. It's not a niche — it's the smart way to buy.

Camera gear is absurdly durable. A mirrorless body rated for 200,000 shutter actuations will last most people a decade. Lenses last essentially forever with basic care. Buying a camera body one generation behind — say a Sony A7 III instead of the A7 IV — saves you 40-50% and gets you 90% of the performance.

Where to buy used:

  • MPB — The largest dedicated used camera marketplace. Standardized grading, fast shipping, warranty included. They recirculated over 500,000 items in a single year.
  • KEH — The veteran. 45+ years in the used camera business. Detailed grading system. Especially strong for vintage and film gear.
  • Facebook Marketplace / r/photomarket — Lower prices, higher risk. Meet locally, inspect the gear, check shutter count.
  • B&H and Adorama used departments — Reliable, but smaller selection than MPB or KEH.

The DSLR-to-mirrorless transition flooded the used market with excellent EF-mount and F-mount lenses. A Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II — a $2,000 lens new — sells for $900-1,100 used and adapts perfectly to Canon RF bodies. This is where the deals are.


The film revival

Film photography is back and it's not just nostalgia. Kodak's film division grew revenue 25% year-over-year in Q4 2025. Portra 400 sales are up 156% since 2020. Photographers under 25 represent 41% of new film customers6.

Why? Several reasons:

Intentionality. 36 exposures per roll forces you to slow down. You compose more carefully when each frame costs money. This discipline makes you a better photographer, full stop.

The look. Film grain, color rendition, highlight rolloff — these are different from digital, not worse. Portra's skin tones, Ektar's saturation, Tri-X's grain structure — these are aesthetic choices that digital tries to emulate but doesn't quite replicate.

The process. Shooting film is tactile. Advancing the film, hearing the shutter, sending rolls to a lab and waiting for scans — it's a different relationship with your images. In an era of infinite digital captures, the constraint is the point.

Getting started with film: A used Canon AE-1, Nikon FM2, or Pentax K1000 runs $100-250. A roll of Kodak Gold 200 costs about $10. Development and scanning is $15-20 per roll at most labs. It's not free, but it's cheaper than people think for the first roll.


What I'd actually buy as a beginner in 2026

Opinionated take. If you're starting from zero:

If your budget is tight: Nikon Z50 II with the kit lens. Learn the fundamentals. Add a Sigma prime lens in three months when you know what focal length you gravitate toward.

If you can stretch: Fujifilm X-M5 or Canon R10. The Fuji if you care about color and the shooting experience. The Canon if you want the deepest ecosystem and fastest autofocus. Either way, skip the kit lens and start with a Sigma or Tamron prime.

If you want full-frame from the start: Sony A7C II. The E-mount lens ecosystem is the most mature, third-party support is unmatched, and the body is small enough to actually carry around.

If you're not sure yet: Shoot with your phone intentionally for a month. Turn off HDR. Shoot in manual mode if your phone supports it. Frame deliberately. If you find yourself frustrated by the limitations — wanting shallower depth of field, more reach, better low-light performance, or raw files — then buy a camera. If you're happy with what the phone produces, save your money.

The one universal truth: Buy one body and two lenses rather than two bodies and one lens. The glass is the investment. The body is the part that gets replaced.


Photography in 2026 is in a genuinely interesting place. The tools are better and more accessible than they've ever been. A $500 camera today outperforms a $5,000 camera from 2015. Your phone is a legitimate photographic tool. Film is alive. The used market is overflowing with great gear.

The only wrong choice is the one that stays in the box. Pick something, go shoot, and figure out what matters to you by making photographs — not by reading specs.
